Call to Action: National Call-In Day for Refugees on Wednesday, March 28

Please Participate in National Call-in Day for Refugees: Wednesday, March 28th:

Tell Congress to Support Refugee Resettlement and

Hold the Administration Accountable to Resettle At Least 45,000 Refugees in FY 2018

Background: We live in an era with an unprecedented 65 million people displaced around the world, including 22.5 million refugees – the highest number in recorded history. Estimates indicate that a person is displaced every 20 minutes.

When global need is at its highest, this Administration has quickly reversed our nation’s long history as a world leader in refugee protection and resettlement. For fiscal year 2018, the Administration set an all-time low refugee admissions goal of 45,000. With this low goal, we turned our back on the values of compassion and welcome we claim to represent. Even worse, with the low number of admission to date, the Administration is only on track to resettle 20,000 refugees this year -- not even meeting their own very modest goal.

By March 31st, the halfway point for Fiscal Year (FY) 2018, the Administration will have resettled just over 10,000 refugees. This amounts to a broken promise to tens of thousands of refugees who face the most rigorous selection, security vetting, and medical screening process of any traveler to the United States.

Resettlement is reserved only for refugees who cannot return to their home countries or rebuild their lives in the country where they first fled. While families remain separated and refugees wait – at times in very unsafe conditions – the Administration has imposed a series of refugee bans to dismantle the refugee resettlement program and leave the world’s most beleaguered, including those caught up in the war in Syria, without hope.

We have a moral responsibility to speak out, highlight refugee stories and hold the Administration accountable to fulfill its commitment to resettle at least the 45,000 refugees set as a goal for this fiscal year. In addition, we are calling for the Administration to set the FY19 admissions goal for at least 75,000 persons, including at least 10,000 Syrians.

Please join the National Call-In Day on March 28th and let your legislators know where you stand. Your voice can help make a difference. Thank you.

I strongly oppose this Administration’s all-time low cap on refugee admissions, as well as the continued Muslim and refugee bans.

I urge you to do everything in your power to see that the Administration resettles at least the 45,000 refugees they have set as the cap for 2018 and commits to resettling at least 75,000 in 2019. This goal should include at least 10,000 Syrians.

Resettlement is a core American value that allows refugees to rebuild their lives in safety and dignity. My community welcomes refugees, and I urge you to reflect the best of our nation by supporting the refugee resettlement program. Thank you.”
