MFA Statement on the Devastation in East Ghouta

Fighting in East Ghouta, outside Damascus, has intensified, devastating the civilian population. In the past week more than 500 people, including over 100 children have been killed as a result of the attacks. Hospitals have been targets of bombings and the remaining facilities are struggling to keep up with the rising number of severely injured civilians. East Ghouta, a suburb of Damascus with a population of about 400,000, has been under siege for more than four years, depriving residents of basic necessities including food and medical supplies. Bombings and ground attacks continue despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for a 30-day ceasefire.

MFA calls for increases in humanitarian relief for the devastated population and proper implementation of ceasefires in order to allow relief to reach those in need.
