A Complete Meltdown of Humanity
The humanitarian crisis in east Aleppo has reached dire proportions. In a situation being described as “a complete meltdown of humanity”, much of the world seems deaf to the desperate pleas for help by the people trying to flee. Any chance the 70,000 or so that remain had of escape ended today when Iranian-backed militias violently halted the evacuations. Those who have fled to the regime-controlled west side of Aleppo will likely become refugees as well, adding close to 150,000 more Syrians to those burgeoning numbers.
The Multifaith Alliance for Syrian Refugees (MFA), a project of the Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding, is guided by the verse in Leviticus— “Thou shalt not stand idly by the blood of thy neighbor.” The basic tenets of all major faiths command us to act on behalf of those suffering inside Syria. While it’s too late to save east Aleppo, it is urgent that we help these desperate war victims now.
Here’s what you can do:
MFA raises funds in cooperation with the Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), which are distributed to carefully-vetted organizations delivering emergency aid to war victims inside Syria and throughout the region. To donate to humanitarian aid for Syrian refugees, click here.
MFA Participating Organizations have redoubled their efforts to deliver life-saving aid to Syrian refugees on the ground. Please consider donating funds to these organizations, so they can respond quickly and effectively to the most urgent needs. Your contributions enable the purchase of local goods for immediate aid, rather than waiting the weeks it takes, especially in winter, for containers of goods to be delivered.
We can do more here in the U.S. by advocating for expedited and enhanced admission of Syrians, engaging our religious leaders and supporting the integration of refugees in our communities. For further suggestions, visit our What You Can Do page to learn more.
Respond to the misinformation and disinformation about Syrian refugees. Now is the time to separate the myths from the facts so we can promote sensible and humane policies. Click here to read more.
